Wester Ross, Scotland

December 2024

Armed with a little bit of knowledge and large dollops of enthusiasm and naivete following my workshop in Northumberland, I took the long-suffering Sandy in tow and we headed for the Highlands. Along the way, I decided to upgrade my camera from a 15-year-old Canon 5D MkII to a nearly-new 5D MkIV. There was some rationale in there - I think the idea was to get better equipment but not splash out completely on a mirrorless setup until I was certain this new passion of mine was going to hold. Well, it did and I shifted to mirrorless during the summer and I guess moving to the MkIV was probably a waste of money. Live and learn, live and learn….

Anyway, I managed to snap a few images which mostly generate disappointment now that I look back on them - especially the trees reflected in the loch. I think in the hands of a more skilled practitioner, there were many stunning images in that moment. Sadly, I didn’t possess the skills. (I did manage to pick up a Bronze award from the Guild later in the year for the first image in the set, so not a total waste.)

But anyway, live and learn, live and learn…
